Clinical Evaluation of Isonicotinic Acid Hydrazide as an Adjuvant in the Treatment of Lepromatous Leprosy

چکیده
A clinical evaluation study of diasone, diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) and dihydrostreptomycin (DHSM) separately, conducted in four institutions including Westfort, has been reported by Doull (2). The present evaluation study of the effects of isonicotinic acid hydrazide (isoniazid, INH) and of streptohydrazid on lepromatous leprosy, continued over a period of two years from September 1953 to September 1955, was modeled on that first study, and this report is modeled on the lines of Doull's report. In evaluating the effect of any drug it seems desirable that its effect should be compared with that of an inert placebo. This is not permissible in a long-term study when human lives and well-being are at stake. However, the beneficial effects of the sulfones in leprosy are now sufficiently established so that new drugs may be compared with the sulfones, taking them as the base line in the search for more effective new medicaments.

The selection of drugs for chemotherapy research in leprosy.
Unlike the problem in the chemotherapy of most infectious diseases, and even of tuberculosis, that of the selection of drugs for clinical work in leprosy is beset with numerous difficulties of diverse nature. The first difficulty arises from the inability of Mycobacterium lepme to grow on any artificial medium, and from the impossibility, at the present stage of research, of transmitting lepros...
متن کاملDe-Novo Presentation of Histoid Leprosy on an Unusual Site
Histoid Leprosy (HL) is a rare variant of Lepromatous Leprosy, occurring in long-standing cases, mostly in a background of acquired drug resistance. Patients usually present with sudden onset multiple nodules and plaques, most often involving the skin and subcutaneous tissue of trunk and lower limbs. Here we report an unusual case of de novo (without any history of prior anti-leprotic therapy) ...
متن کاملLangerhans Cells in Skin Lesions of Leprosy
Background: Langerhans cells are important in the pathogenesis of leprosy. A recent study reported that these cells were almost absent in the epidermis overlying lepromatous lesions. Objective: To investigate a possible relationship between the number of Langerhans cells and the histopathologic spectrum of lesions in patients with leprosy. Methods: An immunohistochemical staining for S100 prot...

Introduction: Leprosy is an ancient deforming disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, which is still poorly understood and often feared by the general public and even by some in the health care professions. Fortunately, the outlook for patients has dramatically improved over the last three decades with the introduction of multi-drug treatment and management strategies that have somewhat dim...
متن کاملChemotherapy of murine leprosy. V. The effects of various combinations of 4, 4 -diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS), streptomycin and isoniazid on mouse leprosy.
In previous communications (3-5) I have reported, among other things, that 4-4'-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS), streptomycin, and isoniazid (isonicotinic acid hydrazide) possess definite therapeutic activity in mouse leprosy, and that the combination of DDS and streptomycin showed an additive effect. The effects of various combinations of DDS, streptomycin and isoniazid on mouse leprosy are repo...
